Al-Ahram Newspaper's Stance on the Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo 1964-1965

Abstract

This study examines the stance of the Egyptian newspaper *Al-Ahram* on developments in the conflict  in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the period (1964–1965), a period marked by intense political crises and internal conflicts  in the Congo, coupled with increased foreign interference in the country’s affairs by the United States and Belgium.  On this basis, the research topic was selected, with its starting point defined as coinciding with the return of Moïse Tshombe to power, and the accompanying conflicts and rebellions in the Congolese provinces (such as Kivu, Kwer, and Stanleyville),  which the central Congolese government countered  through the use of violence and by relying on foreign mercenary forces that Moïse Tshombe had assembled from various countries to confront the Congolese rebels, Meanwhile, the year 1965 was chosen as the end of the study period due to the conclusion of the ongoing conflict among Congolese leaders following a military coup led by Joseph Mobutu, which resulted in his assumption of sole power and the formation of a new government with the support of the United States. Al-Ahram newspaper ensured continuous and regular coverage of these events, as the media compass reflecting Egypt’s political stance in support of African liberation movements against the phenomenon of neocolonialism, which exercises indirect political and economic domination over developing countries by exploiting their financial crises and their dependence on foreign aid.
