Religious Thought in Medieval Europe

(Augustine and Thomas Aquinas as Examples)

Abstract

The concept of religious thought and its influence on the nature of political and social life in medieval Europe is one of the important topics that reveal the relationship between the clergy, the Church, and European society. This study shows how the aspects of life were shaped as a result of the fall of the Roman Empire in Western Europe, and how the intertwining of temporal and spiritual authorities cast its shadow over the scene. Religious thinkers in the Middle Ages, such as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas, played a prominent role in shaping medieval European thought. Their philosophies laid the essential foundation for medieval thought, which was characterized by the dominance of religious ideology. The collapse of the Roman Empire led to repercussions that resulted in the growing authority of the Church. Consequently, the nature of political and social life evolved under ecclesiastical influence, making religion a common factor that intertwined with the daily lives of people The importance of this research stems from the fact that the subject of religious thought in medieval Europe is crucial for understanding the development of religious and philosophical thought in Europe, the nature of the relationship between the clergy and society, and how the clergy contributed to shaping the concepts that governed Europe for centuries, paving the way for the significant transformations of the Renaissance. This research raises a fundamental question about the nature of European thought during the Middle Ages: Was the dominance of religious thought a consequence of the setbacks suffered by the Roman Empire, leading to an increase in the Church's power, or was it a natural development of political circumstances and the growth of the Church's authority, given that religion was the common denominator in the lives of ordinary people? This is what we attempt to answer by proposing the hypothesis that the Church's power increased as a result of two important factors: the weakening of the Roman Empire and the growth of the Church's power due to the advancement of European society.
