Application of RUSLE Model for estimating Soil Erosion in the Basats Basin in Erbil using Geographic Information System
Abstract
The study aimed to calculate the amount of soil erosion in in the Batas Basin in Erbil and identify areas of most exposed to soil erosion risk to take appropriate measures. The study used a GIS techniques in the calculation of the elements of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). The results of the study showed that the spatial distribution of the factor (R) was The highest values (714.1 mm) were in the southern part of the basin as the highest collection rate within the borders of the research area, while it was lowest (551.1 mm) in the far north of the basin and northwest.as the factor (R) is in addition to the factor (LS). (Which is affected by the slope of the research area) is one of the most important variables in the (RUSLE) model, and when applying the model, the study found the detection of areas of degraded soils and calculating their area and determining areas of erosion and degradation at the level of small units of soil, It was found that the Batas Basin is within the middle classification in most of its parts, with an area of (174) km 2, with a rate of (49.7%), areas appeared that suffer from High and very high land degradation affected by the rain and slope factor in particular. The study recommended using the RUSLE model to integrate with GIS and RS techniques in estimating the risk of soil erosion, and that appropriate measures should be taken to prevent soil erosion in the study area.
