Economic Problems and Their Impact on Student Academic Achievement

(A Field Study in Baghdad)

Abstract

There are many factors that influence a student's academic achievement, including social and economic factors. These factors are due to changes that have occurred in Iraqi society and have had a significant impact on students' lives. University education plays a significant role in the lives of people. It shapes the present, charts the future, addresses societal issues and problems, and develops its capabilities. The youth stage is a vital and decisive stage for the individual, during which he goes through many problems, pressures, and cases of determining identity and bearing responsibility, and then social and economic problems appear, which prompted me to research them, which affect the student’s academic achievement. The research is conducted in its theoretical and practical aspects, and the research concluded that the most important results include that most of the sample units, which amount to (100) respondents, are females, and that they are in the age group (18-20) years, and that most of the students are from economically weak families, and that their acceptance to study at the institute is less than their ambition, and this lowers their academic level, and that the size of the families is large for the sample units, as most of them are in the category (6-7) individuals, and this in turn affects the student’s share of meeting his needs, which prompted the student to work to help meet needs, and that the size of the family generates many factors that affect the student’s academic achievement, including the economic, emotional and psychological factor, and the student’s need for a place designated for his studies, which prompts him to go out with friends and stay away from home, as well as to search for work.
